Sangaree

Wine or porter sweetened with sugar and spice, a cool drink of the colonial tavern.

Sangaree was a tavern drink of wine or porter with sugar, nutmeg, and a little water or ice. It was popular in the southern colonies and appears in the account books of the founding era.

Ingredients

  • 1 lemon

Pantry / Durable

  • 2 tbsp sugar

Spices & Seasoning

  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg

Other

  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 1 cup water

Method

  1. Pour the wine into a jug and stir in the sugar until dissolved.

  2. Add the nutmeg, a strip of lemon peel, and the water.

  3. Chill the mixture well, or shake it with ice.

  4. Serve in small glasses with a grating of nutmeg on top.
